Basic information of 60 40 tin lead rosin core solder:

Alloy: Tin based solder with lead.

Composition: 60 40 solder, meaning it's Sn60Pb40, with 60% of tin and 40% of lead in the solder

Core: rosin core at 2.2%. Rosin is a neutral material extracted from pine tree. There is very little & transparent, non corrosive residue after soldering.

Wire diameter: 60 40 tin lead rosin core solder is available from 0.5mm up to 3.2mm. But for soldering electronics, mostly we will see people use 0.8mm, 1mm and 1.2mm. Some applications might need a bigger wire diameter at 2mm or 3mm.

Weight per roll: generally the weight is 500g/roll, 800g/roll or 1000g/roll. Some wholesaler / re-sellers would prefer smaller rolls such as 100g/roll, 200g/roll etc.

Melting point: 60 40 tin lead rosin core solder is 183 to 190 degress Celsius. 

Why do we consider to use 60 40 tin lead rosin core solder?

1. This is a good solder alloy with high tin of 60%, very similar to 63 37 solder. The melting point is low, and wetting is fast, and the solder bead is round & smooth, and has good electrical conductivity.

2. Cost wise it's much cheaper than lead free solder.

3. 60 40 tin lead rosin core solder has pre-fluxed core, it's handy to use, and there is no need to apply external flux in particular. Soldering work can be performed quick & easily.
