What is Solder wire Sn63Pb37?

The solder wire Sn63Pb37 is a tin and lead solder alloy consisting of 63% tin and 37% lead. It's an eutectic alloy that has liquidus temperature and solidus temperature same at 183℃, the lowest melting point within the tin lead solder alloy.

What are the features of solder wire Sn63Pb37?

1. The solder wire Sn63Pb37 has low melting temperature (prevents overheating components) comparing to lead free solders at 217℃.

2. Good wetting of pads and pins, follows more easily comparing to lead free solder wire especially under the case of manual soldering.

3. It can be made with no clean flux core, so one doesn't have to apply it all the time externally.

4. Price is no issue of Sn63Pb37, comparing to lead free solder wire. The solder wire Sn63Pb37 is just at about 2/5 of the SAC305 solder wire.

5. Nice, bright and smooth beads.

How is leaded solder wire Sn63Pb37 comparing to lead free solder wire?

Unfortunately lead free solder wire makes poor quality joints when manual soldering. It doesn't flow as well, wetting small pads can be difficult, often joints end up being weak and matte, instead of strong and shiny, etc.. Lead-free solder is best used with a reflow oven, in paste form. If RoHS compliance (and toxicity) are of no concern, solder wire Sn63Pb37 with rosin flux is an excellent choice, and is good for high reliability applications. Fine for hand soldering or reflow. Leaded solder wire consistently gives better results with less work or rework.
