What tin silver copper solder?

The tin silver copper solder is a solder consisted of tin (Sn), Silver (Ag) and Copper (Cu) alloy, generally know as Sn-Ag-Cu or written as SAC. This is a lead free solder alloy that doesn't contain lead (Pb), can comply with ROHS or REACH standards, can be used for requirements that need lead free raw materials. Tin is the base metal (main content) of this solder, and silver & copper are being added to the tin in a comparative small portion.

Why adding silver & copper into the solder to form tin silver copper solder alloy?

Silver can help to produce smooth bright, leak-tight, good electrically conductive and excellent corrosion-resistant joints for the electronics. While Copper is to improve resistance to thermal cycle fatigue, and improves wetting properties of the molten solder. That's why we add silver & copper, and depending on what properties what we are after, we add different portion of silver and copper to achieve the best cost-effective composition.

How many alloys of tin silver copper solder?

Most commonly seen ones are as below:

SAC305 solder, it's consisted of 96.5% of tin, 3% of silver, 0.5% of copper. A high quality silver bearing lead free solder, that is used for high end applications.

SAC0307 solder, it's consisted of 99% of tin, 0.3% of silver, 0.7% of copper. It's suitable for medium to high end applications.

SAC07 solder, it's cosisted of 99.3% tin & 0.7% copper. Suitable for most general soldering purposes that needs to use lead free solder.
