What is tin and lead solder?

This is a tin based solder with lead being added into it. Depending on the portion of each metal, it can forms different solder alloys to meet different applications requirement. Tin is much more expensive than lead, thus the higher percentage of the tin is, the more expensive it would be, also a more nice solder bead it can achieve.

Can tin and lead solder be made into different forms?

The answer is yes, tin and lead solder can be in 3 forms:

1. Tin and lead solder wire. The alloy is cast into wire and winded into a coil form, very handy to use and suitable for mass production of electronics in the factory or being used for DIY, electronic repairs etc, through a manual soldering or robot soldering.

2. Solder bar. In this case, the solder alloy is cast into a bar form. It would be used for dip soldering, wave soldering of electronic manufacturing, or used for joining metals by using torch soldering gun.

3. Solder paste. In this case, the tin and lead is made into solder powder (at 20 t0 40 microns diameter) and then being added into the grease to make a paste. It's used for SMT soldering.
