What does solder wire without flux mean?

This means the solder wire is not pre-fluxed, it's just the solder alloy. Solder wire can be classifed as flux cored solder wire & solid core solder wire (without flux).

Why do we use solder wire without flux?

First of all, the general practice to perform a soldering work, definitely we need to apply flux, either the flux is pre-made into the solder wire, or it's prepared in separete and apply in separate, without flux the solder can't well attached to the soldering area (solder joint). But for some applications, a solid solder wire without flux will be more suitable, users will apply external flux before doing the soldering. There could be several reasons:

1. When soldering metals, a strong (generally acid based) flux is more suitable, applying the liquid flux before soldering will help the flux to better clean the soldering area and make the surface of metal suitable for solder to attach on. If it's pre-fluxed, the flux might be too small amount to perform a nice soldering work.

2. For robot soldering (automatic soldering) of electronics, there is spraying devices to spray liquid flux before the robot starts to do the soldering, in this case, it's not necessary to use a rosin flux core solder wire, a solder wire without flux is more proper.
