What is a solder core wire?

Solder core wire is a type of solder wire that is pre-fluxed inside the core, it's a combination of solder alloy with the flux, a 2-in-1 option. 

 

Why do we use solder core wire comparing to solid wire?

To perform a soldering work, we definitely will need to use compatible flux. The function of flux is to help to solder to flow, bond the solder area well, and clean the surface of solder area. If we choose a solid solder wire, we will need to prepare flux in seperate, so called external flux, so it would take two steps to complete a soldering work: step 1 is to dip the soldering iron tip with flux and step 2 is to apply the solder onto the solder area to form the solder bead. While using a pre fluxed solder core wire, we can directly apply it onto the solder area by using soldering iron, straight forward and all done in one step, handy & easy to use. 

How do judge if the solder is solid wire or solder core wire?

There are several sources to judge:

1. See on the circular labels put on the reel, generally it has necessary descriptions on it stating if it's flux core or solid wire. If you see words of "core wire", "flux" on it, it's a solder core wire.

2. Or, we can cut the wire and see the section, if we see a small white spot in it, that's solder core wire. Like below photo.
