What is solid core solder?

Solid core solder is a type of wire solder, that is just with solder alloy (the metal), without any flux inside the wire. Meaning there is another major type of wire solder, that can be made with a flux core inside the wire (pre-fluxed).

 

What do we need to pay attention to when using a solid core solder?

Due to solid core solder doesn't contain any flux in it, so it's a must for users to prepare suitable flux to be used together with this type of solder, otherwise the solder won't stick to the solder joint. Flux is the agent to help the solid core solder to melt fast and flow eventually to form a nice solder bead.

 

Why do we use solid core solder?

This is for a reason of more flexible working with the solder. To work on different materials or different applications, a proper flux must be used, thus with a solid core solder, plus a suitable flux in separete, we can do soldering of different stuffs more easily.
