What composition is the best lead free solder?

This is a topic that without absolut answer. A proper composition of lead free solder for the required application is the best solder, regardless to it's price. But generally, for electronic soldering, SAC305 lead free solder is considered as best; While for soldering of metals (copper plumbings etc), Sn93Cu7 lead free solder or Sn99Cu1 lead free solder would be deemed as best.

 

Why are these compositions best lead free solder?

SAC305 lead free solder is composition of Sn96.5Ag3.0Cu0.5, it contains high percentage of silver & small percentage of copper. Adding silver is to enhance the electrical conductivity and create a leak-tight and smooth round solder bead. Adding copper is to increase the resistant to thermal fatigue & improve the wetting property; All these making SAC305 alloy to be one of the best lead free solder.

Sn97Cu3 or Sn99Cu1 lead free solder are suitable for the soldering of copper plumbings. As mentioned above copper increase the resistance to thermal fatigue thus making it suitable for plumbing applications.
