Do I need flux to solder wires?
Do I need flux to solder wires?
Answer: Yes, all solder wires must be used together with compatible flux, because flux will help to clean the tarnished surface of solder area and help to solder to better melt and flow. But it depends on what type of solder wires you're using, because some solder wires already have a flux as core, so during soldering, user is not required to prepare external flux in separate.
Solder wires with solid core. This type of solder wire is made with a compact / solid form, without putting any flux inside the wire. When using this type of solder wires, users need to prepare external flux in separate to be used together.
Solder wires with flux core. This type of solder wire is quite handy, generally the solder wire is made with a 2% flux inside the solder wire, user can directly use solder iron to solder it directly. There're several traces for you to judge if the solder wire is with flux core or without flux. Generally you can see on the circular sticker that is printed with basic information of the solder wires, it generally shows flux 2.0% if it's a flux cored wires; also when you see from the section (the cut) of the solder wires, if you can notice a small white spot or a tiny hole, that's the flux cored solder wires.
