What is tin lead solder and why to use them?

Tin lead solder is one big catogary of solder that is tin based alloy but combined with lead. Tin lead solder alloy has long existence in the market and was proved to be a good solder alloy for below reasons:

1. Low melting point (when comparing to lead free solder), on average, the melting point is about 40 to 50 degrees lower than lead free solder, thus most users will find a tin lead solder is easier to use.

2. Lower cost. Tin lead solder is about just half cost of a lead free solder, as part of the solder is lead, while lead is a cheap metal. Lead free solder generally contains high value metals such as silver, which makes it expensive.

What can tin lead solder be used for and what it can't be used for?

1. Soldering of eletronics. Tin lead solder alloy Sn63Pb37, Sn60Pb40, Sn40Pb60 are frequently being used for manual soldering or robot soldering to assemble eletronic components. Some low quality requirement applications, can use Sn20Pb80, Sn10Pb90 etc.

2. Assembly of metals. Tin lead solder Sn60Pb40, Sn50Pb40 are frequently being used for plumbing copper pipes, stained glass assembly. Sn40Pb40 is frequently being used for radiator manufacturing.

3. For the cases of soldering that asked for ROHS or Reach compliant, tin lead solder should't be used. And it's also prohibited to use tin lead solder for portable drinking water pipes.
